Over 90% of large-scale medical equipment in China comes from imports

The US-China Business Council is jointly held to explore the role of medical science and technology innovation in promoting the progress of the medical system and the environment needed to foster such innovation.
According to data from the China Medical Materials Association, the sales scale of China's medical device market has increased from 18 billion yuan in 2001 to 170 billion yuan in 2012. At the same time, as of the end of 2012, about 90% of China's medical device production enterprises were small and medium-sized enterprises with an annual income of less than 20 million yuan and relatively low production technology content.
Zhang Zhaofeng believes that the main reasons for China's dependence on imported medical devices include the imperfect driving force mechanism for independent innovation, multi subject collaborative innovation cooperation mechanism, industrial chain, and market environment.
Zhao Changwen, director of the Enterprise Research Institute of the Development Research Center of the State Council, pointed out that public policies should enable enterprises to have innovation motivation, so that independent innovative products can have sufficient returns.
Li Bijing, a member of the Council of the US-China Business Council, said that in the process of formulating medical policies, the whole medical system must be considered to benefit from medical technology innovation. For example, the innovation of medical devices involves medical personnel, university or enterprise technical experts, etc. Policies that encourage collaborative innovation among universities, healthcare professionals, and businesses will play an important role in promoting innovation.
Zhang Zhaofeng also stated that medical devices are an interdisciplinary combination of technologies, and different innovative entities should have clear distribution mechanisms on issues such as mutual transformation, benefit distribution, and intellectual property rights.
Yu Qiao, Director of the Institute of Public Policy at the School of Public Management at Tsinghua University, said that appropriately supporting innovation in the healthcare industry can not only help improve the efficiency and quality of the healthcare system, but also promote the development of local technology and industry.
